Intuition & Knowledge
Intuition & Knowledge
A powerful combination
Kumu Dane Kaohelani Silva* said: "Intuition without knowledge is an illusion, a guess, and knowledge without intuition remains pure theory. Intuition combined with knowledge leads us to our goal. Intuition does not simply mean blindly following our emotions and feelings. Emotions (naʻau) are part of it and are very important. They must be clarified, examined, and not acted out unfiltered."
What is intuition anyway?
* Kumu Dane was our Lomilomi, Laʻau Lapaʻau (plant medicine), and martial arts teacher in Hawaiʻi from 2002 until his passing in 2022.

Intuition & Knowledge
Intuition must be practiced and learned. We, as Lomilomi-Practitioners, develop intuition by engaging with others, touching people, perceiving nervous systems, learning to create depth and presence, adjusting speed and time—by perceiving what and how a person's essence speaks to you through their nervous system, breath, tension, and warmth. I call this connection BodyTalk, a communication from being to being, from person to person, from spirit to spirit, from nervous system to nervous system. When my clients ask me what I feel during a treatment, I always say that my experiences cannot be put into words spontaneously. Rather, communication is a holistic embodiment that is not processed and evaluated by the intellect.
Over time, we learn to anticipate; we perceive things before they become apparent. This is not a special, unique gift. It is experience, openness, confidence, connection.
Knowledge combined with experience and openness with genuine interest in others opens up space for integrated intuition.
Intuition is condensed knowledge – and knowledge needs intuition to come alive. Intuition and knowledge complement each other. Intuition draws on experience-based, implicit knowledge and is often faster; analytical knowledge provides reliable, reflective decisions – the combination is often optimal.
Intuition without knowledge = haphazard feeling, guessing
In massage, this would be:
- just “following your feelings”
- touching without understanding anatomy, tissue, breathing, physiology
- projecting your own emotions onto the recipient's body
Knowledge without intuition = mechanical technique
You are probably familiar with the other extreme:
- perfect techniques
- correct sequences
- but no presence, no deep listening, no connection
Then a Lomilomi massage becomes:
- Choreography
- Wellness routine
- or “treatment” that does not really reach the person
The connection: Embodied intuition
In traditional Lomilomi work, intuition is:
- Developed and matured through experience
- Connected to the culture of Aloha and Lokahi
- Anchored in the nervous system
- Trained in contact, in genuine touch
It arises from:
- Anatomical knowledge
- Cultural understanding
- Years of experience, practice, application, reflection, and integration
- Breath, posture, meaning
- Relationship to space, to the moment, to the person, and to everything that surrounds us
- Repetition and movement
- Silence
- Self-awareness
A Lomilomi therapist:
- feels without losing themselves
- is open without judging
- guides without controlling
Knowledge provides security.
Presence opens perception.
Intuition connects both in the moment.
Intuition is listening deeply, supported by knowledge, presence, and the values of A L O H A.

Hawaiian proverb – ʻOlelo Noʻeau:
“He lawaiʻa no ke kai pāpaʻu, he pōkole ke aho; he lawaiʻa no ke kai hohonu he loa ke aho.” (A person who fishes in shallow waters uses a short line; a person who fishes in deep waters has a long line.)
Those who know less have short lines; those who possess deeper, fundamental knowledge can fish with long lines.
