Letting Go Versus Conscious Farewell - Why the Difference Changes Our Lives
“You just have to let go.”
How often do we hear this phrase—or even say it to ourselves? It sounds simple, almost self-evident. But what does letting go really mean? And is that what we’re looking for?
In our Lomilomi training, we delve deeply into a different perspective: It’s not letting go that moves us forward, but a consciously crafted farewell.
Farewell and letting go are often equated. Yet they describe two different inner paths.
Letting go often feels like giving something away, throwing it away, or pushing it aside. Underlying this is the desire to no longer have to feel a certain thing. Pain is supposed to disappear, memories are supposed to fade, and difficult experiences are supposed to be left behind as quickly as possible. But what isn’t given space doesn’t disappear. It remains hidden and continues to have an effect.
Every farewell that hasn’t been fully experienced leaves a void. Over time, this creates inner spaces that remain disconnected. The path through life narrows, opportunities are lost, and we feel at the mercy of circumstances.
Farewell is a conscious process.
Farewell does not mean clinging to the past. Farewell means facing reality with an open heart and courage.
Something is no longer the way it once was.
Acknowledging this truth, giving it space, and yet remaining connected—to what was, to longing, and to life itself—opens up a new path.
Farewells are not states of being. They are life transitions.
They do not lead us away from something, but through it.
They offer direction, integration, and growth.
Those who consciously navigate the process of farewell often discover:
- I can bear pain.
- It will not destroy me.
- I am capable of taking action.
- I can integrate this experience into my life story.
- And I can move forward.
Especially within the Hawaiian tradition of Lomilomi massage, we understand this path not as removing pain, but as restoring connection – to ourselves, to our bodies, to our ancestors, to nature, and to life itself.
Change is part of life.
Nothing remains.
Yet every farewell we consciously move through allows us to become a little deeper, more aware, and more authentic.
Perhaps that is why the most important question is not:
“How can I let go?”
But rather:
“How can I give this farewell a dignified place and move forward from it with renewed strength?”
Are you currently going through a process of farewell, or are you facing a change in your life? Do you feel the desire to take a next step in your growth? Perhaps you are experiencing feelings such as anger, grief, or heartache and would like to meet them with greater understanding and awareness.
With a Lomilomi massage, we invite you to pause, create space for what you have experienced, and allow yourself to be guided on your path toward deeper connection and more possibilities.
